Luka Dončić has clearly identified the player types he needs the Dallas Mavericks to acquire this offseason. After a disappointing playoff sweep by the Oklahoma City Thunder, the superstar guard called for more shooters to counter double-teams and an athletic, shot-blocking center.
Dončić finished the season with a strong 53-29 record but deemed the year a failure for not winning a title. He was direct in his assessment of any season that does not end with a championship. “Whenever you don’t win, it’s a bad season,” Dončić stated. “So if you don’t win, it’s not a good one.”
His request for specific personnel is rooted in offensive strategy. Dončić operates as one of the league’s most ball-dominant players, consistently facing aggressive defensive schemes. He explained how surrounding talent directly impacts his ability to create offense. “If I have shooters, they won’t double me as much and it helps me out. I think I always need shooters around me because I usually get double-teamed a lot, so I think I need shooters,” he said. This spacing would open up the floor for his primary attack.
In addition to perimeter threats, Dončić specified the need for a different type of frontcourt partner to enhance his pick-and-roll game. He said the team needs: “And some centers who can jump high and block shots.” This would provide a vertical lob threat that forces defenses to protect the rim, which in turn can leave shooters open. The public nature of his comments now places the focus on the Mavericks’ front office to deliver on their franchise player’s blueprint for success this summer.
