The New York Knicks face an immediate roster challenge after winning the 2026 NBA Championship. Owner James Dolan has stated the team will not cross the league’s punitive second luxury tax apron, a decision that puts key reserves Mitchell Robinson and Landry Shamet at risk.
Dolan’s stance was unequivocal. Speaking on WFAN, he called crossing the threshold a suicidal move for a franchise. “There’s certain things in the that you’d have to be suicidal to do,” Dolan said. “One of them is the second apron. Cannot go into the second apron.” This financial line creates a serious problem for a front office trying to retain its title-winning depth. Teams operating above the second apron face severe restrictions on trades and future draft assets, limiting their ability to improve the roster.
According to SNY insider Ian Begley, this policy has immediate consequences. “If Knicks stay below 2nd apron, they will lose Mitchell Robinson and Landry Shamet … something seems amiss here,” Begley stated. Robinson, the team’s longest-tenured player, was an essential force off the bench, providing elite paint protection and offensive rebounding. His presence was a stabilizing factor for the second unit throughout the championship run.
Shamet’s departure would be equally significant. Signed to a minimum contract, he delivered one of the best value performances in the league, shooting over 39% from three-point range before a historic shooting display in the Eastern Conference finals. Retaining both players would likely push New York over Dolan’s mandated limit. Team president Leon Rose must now balance the chemistry of a championship roster against the long-term financial and teambuilding flexibility the owner demands.
