The Story in 60 Seconds

Blue Mountain Racing has revealed plans for a new privately funded Formula 1 circuit in South Africa's Swartland region, aiming to host a Grand Prix by 2031. The project could fulfill Lewis Hamilton's long-standing wish to see Formula 1 return to the African continent before his retirement. Formula 1 has not raced in Africa since the 1993 South African Grand Prix at Kyalami.

The proposed 4.8km FIA grade-one facility would accommodate approximately 125,000 spectators daily and operate as a year-round automotive and events precinct near Cape Town. Blue Mountain Racing Chair Neal Froneman confirmed initial contact has been made with Formula 1 and MotoGP, though the sport has not yet officially responded to the proposal.
