Alexander Nikishin may be looking for 5 x $9 million, and the Washington Capitals will be looking to add before the trade deadline.

Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Alexander Nikishin is reportedly seeking a five-year contract extension carrying a $9 million annual salary cap hit, according to TSN's Darren Dreger. Meanwhile, the Washington Capitals are expected to actively explore additions ahead of the NHL trade deadline to maximize their Stanley Cup chances in what is confirmed to be Alex Ovechkin's final NHL season.
Daily Faceoff's David Pagnotta noted that general manager Chris Patrick and the Capitals entered the season with an aggressive mindset following significant roster additions. Pagnotta indicated the team will monitor the market closer to the deadline to further bolster their depth alongside young players like Ryan Leonard and Cole Hutson.
