The Story in 60 Seconds

Scarlets are fighting for survival following the Welsh Rugby Union's preferred plan to cut Welsh professional men's teams from four to three by 2028. Under the proposed model, either Scarlets or Ospreys would cease to exist. Managing director Jon Daniels argues that Welsh rugby must explore ways to maintain all four professional sides, warning that eliminating professional rugby in Llanelli would severely damage the sport and its deep community connections across west Wales.

While Scarlets report increases in season-ticket revenue and a 7% rise in attendance, the club has not provided a fully funded alternative to sustain four teams. Instead, Daniels advocates for a 10-year development plan to achieve viability. Meanwhile, team operations, training, and recruitment continue normally under head coach Dwayne Peel and director of rugby Nigel Davies amid ongoing uncertainty.
