MLB proposes shorter season; modified playoffs
Key Things to Know
  • MLB proposed shortening the regular season to 154 games and modifying the postseason format.
  • The Division Series would expand to seven games in 2027, with top seeds selecting their playoff opponents.
  • The proposals depend on players accepting a salary cap and floor, which the MLBPA opposes.
The Story in 60 Seconds

Major League Baseball has submitted a new proposal to the MLBPA featuring a shortened 154-game regular season starting in 2029 and an expanded postseason format beginning in 2027. Under the plan, the Division Series would expand from five to seven games, and higher-seeded teams would have the ability to select their playoff opponents.

However, all proposals remain contingent on the inclusion of a salary cap and floor, which the players' union has consistently opposed. The league also proposed universal off-days on Mondays for most teams, while a potential lockout looms on December 2 if a deal is not reached.
