After a breakout campaign where he averaged 23.3 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 5.5 assists, he established himself as a legitimate offensive weapon in the league. He’s a tough shot-maker who can create his own offense, run the pick-and-roll, and find open teammates. It’s this complete offensive package that has teams with cap space ready to write a huge check. He shot an efficient 49% from the field, proving he can handle a high usage rate effectively.
The Pistons, fresh off a run to the East semis, are hunting for another primary playmaker and shooter. They need more firepower to take the next step. A reporter for The Athletic, Sam Amick, confirmed their interest. “Detroit, which is believed to be among the suitors for Los Angeles Lakers guard Austin Reaves if he makes it to unrestricted free agency, is also said to be interested in the Oklahoma City Thunder’s Isaiah Joe,” Amick wrote. Adding Reaves would instantly upgrade their backcourt and give them a reliable scorer in clutch situations, taking pressure off their existing stars.
This puts the Lakers in a brutal spot. General Manager Rob Pelinka has to juggle re-signing Reaves with a clear need for a new center and, most importantly, resolving the LeBron James situation. Matching a near-max contract for Reaves would rocket their payroll deep into the luxury tax, severely limiting their flexibility to build out the rest of the roster. But letting him walk for nothing after his development would be a massive organizational failure. The clock is ticking toward the July 1 start of free agency, and a decision must be made.
