The Story in 60 Seconds

The Atlanta Braves have designated 30-year-old shortstop Luke Williams for assignment as they begin reshaping their 40-man roster for the offseason. The transaction occurred two days after Atlanta was eliminated from the National League Division Series by the Los Angeles Dodgers. Williams appeared in only two regular-season games for the Braves this season.

To fill the open spot on the 40-man roster, the Braves selected the contract of 32-year-old left-handed pitcher Danny Young from Triple-A Gwinnett to prevent him from entering minor league free agency. Atlanta now has five days to trade, release, or place Williams on waivers, an outcome he has experienced multiple times previously with the organization.
