Torrential rain again sparks chaos and jeopardy as Singapore GP sprint delayed
Key Things to Know
  • Torrential rain delayed the start of the Singapore Grand Prix sprint race at Marina Bay.
  • Standing water around turns 2 and 3 prompted track inspections and a delayed start.
  • Conditions eventually improved enough for race control to permit formation laps behind the safety car.
The Story in 60 Seconds

Torrential rain struck the Marina Bay Street Circuit just 15 minutes before the start of the Singapore Grand Prix sprint. The sudden downpour forced all 11 teams to scramble and erect awnings on the grid, prompting the FIA to delay the start due to heavy standing water around turns 2 and 3.

After track inspections by the medical car showed improving track conditions, race control scheduled two formation laps behind the safety car. Drivers were subsequently informed that the sprint race would proceed with a standing start once formation laps concluded.
