Boston Red Sox pitcher Garrett Whitlock unknowingly played through a fractured tibia late in the season and during the playoffs. According to a report by Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald, the severe injury was initially misdiagnosed by the team's medical staff while Whitlock experienced pain throughout the final month of the regular season.
The fracture was only discovered through imaging following Boston's postseason series loss to the New York Yankees in the American League Division Series. Despite the injury, Whitlock pitched 7.1 scoreless innings in September before struggling in his lone playoff appearance.
