Wilyer Abreu's career-best season ended with a career-worst OPS. As close as he is to stardom, it's clear that he still has a few too many holes in his game.

Writer Brandon Glick argues that Boston Red Sox outfielder Wilyer Abreu must overcome severe offensive inconsistency to reach his full potential. Despite setting career bests with 24 home runs, a 10.4% walk rate, and an MLB-leading 28 Defensive Runs Saved across 157 games in 2026, Abreu recorded a career-low 112 wRC+ and .773 OPS due to dramatic month-to-month slumps.
According to the analysis, Abreu excelled in April and August but fell below league-average production in every other month. Glick notes that Abreu's streaky tendencies carried into the postseason, where his quiet performance contributed to Boston's low-scoring Wild Card Round exit against the New York Yankees.
