Steve Smith took four catches as Australia took a first-innings lead at Kingsmead

Steve Smith took four spectacular catches to break the world record for the most Test catches by a non-wicketkeeper as Australia took control of the first Test in Durban. South Africa was bowled out for 284 in their first innings, conceding a 106-run deficit. Openers Nic Maddinson and Travis Head guided Australia to 0-33 at stumps before bad light brought an early end to day three.
Smith's second catch of the day was his 221st in Test cricket, moving him past England's Joe Root. Despite resilient lower-order contributions from Simon Harmer and Keshav Maharaj, the Proteas' top order struggled against Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon, leaving Australia leading by 139 runs overall.
