The Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly prioritizing guard Marcus Smart over center Deandre Ayton as they construct their roster for next season. With both players holding player options, an NBA insider suggests the team’s preference is dictated by its focus on building around Luka Dončić.
The Lakers acquired both Smart and Ayton from the buyout market last season, and each became a starter. Their arrival was described as “…a godsend for the team as they bridged from whatever they were before the Dončić trade to whatever they’re going to be next.” Now, the organization must make long-term decisions as it reshapes the lineup.
According to Dan Woike of The Athletic, the choice between the two veterans comes down to offensive and defensive fit. “(The Lakers) have also spoken about a desire to get younger and more athletic. If I had to pick one to be back, I’d lean Smart. I just think the Lakers want a more traditional (Luka) Dončić-style center, wrote Woike.”
This suggests the front office is searching for a center who operates primarily as a lob threat in the pick-and-roll or can space the floor, archetypes that have historically paired well with Dončić. Ayton, while a solid contributor, does not fit that specific mold. Smart’s value lies in his perimeter defense and toughness, qualities that are essential next to a high-usage offensive star.
Even if Ayton exercises his player option, his place on the roster is not guaranteed, as the team could still explore trade scenarios. The official start of NBA free agency on June 30 will provide clarity on the Lakers’ direction.
