Australia established a 139-run overall lead on Day 3 of the first Test in Durban after dismissing South Africa for 284 in their first innings. Resuming at 27/1, the Proteas suffered middle-order collapses against Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon before late tail-end partnerships dragged them past the follow-on mark. Australia's openers then raced to 33/0 in 5.4 overs before bad light brought an early end to play.
Cummins led the bowling attack with 3-54, while Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and Lyon took two wickets each. Steve Smith took four catches during the innings, including his 221st Test catch to surpass Joe Root for the most catches by a non-wicketkeeper in Test history. David Bedingham top-scored for the Proteas with 49.
