Steve Smith surpassed Joe Root to become the highest catcher in Test cricket history as a non-wicketkeeper, reaching 221 catches at Kingsmead, Durban on October 11, 2026.
Nathan Lyon expressed gratitude for Steve Smith after Smith set a new world record for the most Test catches by a non-wicketkeeper. Smith secured his 221st catch during day three of the first Test between Australia and South Africa at Kingsmead, Durban, on October 11, 2026. The milestone catch came off Pat Cummins' bowling to dismiss David Bedingham, surpassing Joe Root's previous record of 220.
Lyon praised Smith's anticipation and reflexes, calling his premeditated catches freakish. Smith took four catches during the day, including one off Lyon to dismiss Temba Bavuma, extending their fielding partnership to 65 catches off Lyon's bowling across their careers.
