The Washington Wizards are exploring options to acquire a second first-round pick ahead of Tuesday’s NBA Draft. The front office aims to address a clear need for a reliable backup center to support their young core, a move team president Michael Winger said is “not inconceivable.”
Washington’s current frontcourt includes Marvin Bagley III and rookie Alex Sarr, with Tristan Vukcevic and Julian Reese providing depth. However, Vukcevic’s defensive performance last season is a concern; opponents shot 51.7% against him, one of the highest rates for a big man in the league. With Reese still developing on a two-way contract, the team lacks a proven paint protector on its second unit, putting pressure on the front office to act.
The Wizards have been accumulating draft assets since Winger and general manager Will Dawkins took control in 2023, but they hold only one first-round pick this year. According to reports, they could package future second-round picks and a player like forward Justin Champagnie to move into the late lottery. Potential targets in that range include Michigan’s 7-foot-3 center Aday Mara, his teammate Morez Johnson Jr., or Washington’s Hannes Steinbach. Each player offers the defensive presence and rebounding the team currently lacks off the bench.
Executing such a trade would align with the front office’s strategy of aggressively rebuilding through the draft. A deal with a team like the Golden State Warriors (No. 11), Oklahoma City Thunder (No. 12), or Miami Heat (No. 13) would likely require Washington to surrender multiple future assets. Still, securing a cost-controlled rookie center for four years could be a crucial step in solidifying the roster around their top draft selection and accelerating their long-term plan.
