Cleveland's 7-3 win in Game 1 of the ALCS was practically an advertisement for its aggressive midseason roster construction, and the Pirates should be taking notes.

Writer Emma Lingan argues that the Cleveland Guardians' 7-3 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 1 of the ALCS highlights the Pittsburgh Pirates' trade deadline shortcomings. Cleveland relied heavily on in-season acquisitions, including Foster Griffin, Nathaniel Lowe, Jo Adell, and Patrick Bailey, to secure the comeback win. Lingan contends that this demonstrates how aggressive roster construction across multiple areas positioned Cleveland for deep postseason success while Pittsburgh missed out.
While Pirates general manager Ben Cherington acquired bullpen arms Luke Weaver, Camilo Doval, Kirby Yates, and Lake Bachar, Lingan criticizes the team for neglecting offensive depth. Pittsburgh's run production dropped from 5.32 runs per game before the All-Star break to 3.71 afterward, leading to an 82-80 finish. Lingan suggests Pittsburgh should follow Cleveland's example by addressing multiple roster weaknesses during postseason pushes.
