The Story in 60 Seconds

Formula 1 has agreed to a 10-year deal to stage a Grand Prix in Rwanda starting in the early 2030s. The event marks F1's first race on the African continent since the 1993 South African Grand Prix at Kyalami. Officially titled the Formula 1 African Grand Prix, presented by Visit Rwanda, the race will be held at a new purpose-built circuit in Bugesera, roughly 40 kilometers south of Kigali.

The venue will feature an FIA Grade 1 standard circuit co-designed by Alex Wurz's WurzDesign and Tilke Engineers and Architects. The project forms part of a wider development initiative led by the Rwanda Development Board, with F1 drivers Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen, and George Russell expressing strong support for the sport's African return.
