The fact that the Rugby League World Cup is not on free-to-air TV is a “travesty”, according to former England international Jon Wilkin. For the first time in over half a century, the BBC will not broadcast any World Cup…

Former England international Jon Wilkin has called on politicians, including Andy Burnham, to challenge the decision to place the Rugby League World Cup behind a paywall. For the first time in over 50 years, the BBC will not broadcast live or on-demand televised matches, having chosen not to bid. Instead, subscription service Premier Sports secured the tournament rights, while BBC Radio 5 Live will carry radio commentary.
Wilkin described the lack of free-to-air coverage as a travesty that damages the sport's growth and accessibility in working-class communities. A subscription to Premier Sports costs £18.99 per month, potentially requiring fans to pay twice across the tournament window. Salford head coach Paul Rowley agreed with Wilkin's views, which follow earlier appeals from DCMS Secretary Lisa Nandy.
