Was the Pirates' offensive resurgence actually sustainable, or did an explosive first half disguise problems that never really went away?

Writer Emma Lingan argues that the Pittsburgh Pirates' record-breaking offensive campaign in 2026 masked a severe second-half deterioration. Pittsburgh established a new franchise record with 186 home runs and averaged 5.32 runs per contest before the All-Star break. However, scoring tumbled to roughly 3.86 runs per game across the final 65 games, accompanied by a 26.3% strikeout rate and a total of 1,505 strikeouts on the year.
While injuries to Oneil Cruz, Konnor Griffin, Ryan O'Hearn, and Endy Rodríguez contributed to the downturn, Lingan cautions against complacency. With home run leader Brandon Lowe heading into free agency, Lingan warns that general manager Ben Cherington risks repeating past roster mistakes if he relies solely on young prospects to fix the team's underlying offensive inconsistency.
