The NRL are expected to introduce a Wildcard Weekend in either 2027 and 2028 following the success of the concept in the AFL this year.
The NRL is reportedly preparing to introduce a wildcard weekend to its finals series in either 2027 or 2028, expanding the playoff format to 10 teams. Under the proposed structure, the seventh-placed team will face the tenth-placed team, while the eighth-placed side will play the ninth-placed side to determine the final two spots in the traditional top-eight bracket. Clubs have already been consulted for feedback on the format.
The concept previously featured in the NRL during the 1998 season following the merger of the ARL and Super League into a 20-team competition. The planned revamp aligns with the competition's impending growth, which includes a Perth team joining as the 18th franchise, the Chiefs entering as the 19th team in 2028, and a 20th team expected by the 2029 season.
