Novak Djokovic suffered a surprise second-round defeat to Hubert Hurkacz at the Shanghai Masters, losing 6-4 6-3 in 87 minutes. The defeat came just three days after the 39-year-old won his 102nd career title at the China Open in Beijing. It marked Hurkacz's first victory against Djokovic in nine career head-to-head meetings between the two players.
Contesting his sixth match in 10 days, Djokovic was undone by a single break of serve in each set. Currently ninth in the race to Turin, he will now likely need a strong result at the Paris Masters in November to qualify for the season-ending ATP Finals.
