The Story in 60 Seconds

Former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin revealed on the New Heights podcast that he sensed a "risky edge" in Travis Kelce during a pre-draft meeting at the 2013 NFL Scouting Combine. Tomlin recalled intentionally seating Hall of Fame defensive tackle "Mean" Joe Greene under a lone light to intimidate prospects, adding that despite Kelce's volatile edge, he desired to work with that type of player.

Despite evaluating the tight end's talent, Pittsburgh passed on Kelce due to maturity concerns stemming from a 2010 college suspension. The Kansas City Chiefs later selected Kelce 63rd overall in the third round after head coach Andy Reid received a personal recommendation from older brother Jason Kelce.
