The New York Giants are placing increased emphasis on ball security in response to a surge of "peanut punch" forced fumbles across the NFL. The focus follows an overtime fumble by Cam Skattebo, caused by Washington Commanders defensive tackle Daron Payne, which cost the Giants an opportunity to win on Sunday. Offensive coordinator Matt Nagy and head coach John Harbaugh noted that defenders across the league are actively being coached to punch the ball loose.
Nagy emphasized that players must consistently cover the football with two hands, especially in critical situations, despite regular practice drills addressing the issue. Special teams coordinator Chris Horton also highlighted ball protection concerns following a fumble by returner Tyrone Tracy, stressing proper ball placement along the boundary during returns.
