Former major league catcher Martín Maldonado has lined up his next job in baseball. Maldonado will serve as the Tigers’ quality control coach, Chandler Rome and Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic report.
The Detroit Tigers are hiring former major league catcher Martín Maldonado as their quality control coach, according to The Athletic. The move reunites the 40-year-old with Tigers manager A.J. Hinch, who managed him in Houston, as well as starting pitcher Framber Valdez. Maldonado fills a vacancy created after Detroit promoted former quality control coach Billy Boyer to third base coach in July.
Maldonado retired as a player after a 15-year career and spent the past season as a special assistant with the Atlanta Braves. Widely viewed as a future MLB manager, he is also set to manage Indios de Mayaguez in the Puerto Rican Winter League this year.
