The Spaniard reflected on a horrible night en route to a Borussia Dortmund game where a stroke of luck potentially saved his life. This article contains elements of a distressing nature.

Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino has reflected on the April 2017 Borussia Dortmund team bus bombing ahead of its upcoming tenth anniversary. Speaking to The Players' Tribune, Merino recalled the terrifying blast that shattered the wrist of teammate Marc Bartra and left the squad in shock as they departed their hotel to face AS Monaco in the Champions League.
Merino revealed that a last-minute seating change likely saved his life. He chose an adjustable seat near the front of the bus for extra legroom, leaving his regular seat next to Bartra empty, where a large piece of shrapnel was later found lodged in the headrest.
