The Los Angeles Lakers’ pursuit of an elite center has encountered a significant obstacle, with top trade targets Jalen Duren and Walker Kessler reportedly unavailable. This development forces the team to reconsider its strategy for supporting superstar Luka Doncic and upgrading a critical position this offseason.
After a season where Deandre Ayton failed to solidify the frontcourt, the Lakers identified Detroit’s Duren and Utah’s Kessler as primary targets. However, according to NBA insider Brett Siegel, a deal for Duren is unlikely. “Although the Lakers have expressed interest in him previously, Duren is not viewed as a realistic option for Los Angeles, sources said,” Siegel reported. This effectively closes one of the team’s preferred pathways to acquiring the athletic, rim-running big man Doncic requires to maximize his pick-and-roll proficiency.
The focus then shifted to Kessler, but that option also appears blocked. Siegel noted other potential targets before detailing Kessler’s specific situation. “That leaves a few other notable names worth discussing: III, Walker Kessler, and ,” Siegel wrote. He then clarified Kessler’s contractual status. “… Kessler is a restricted free agent that the do not want to see go elsewhere. Even he himself has expressed a desire to hammer out the specifics of a long-term deal with Utah, so the chances of the Lakers getting involved for Kessler, a player they’ve attempted to trade for multiple times, is extremely low.”
With both primary targets off the board, the Lakers face a difficult reality. The franchise must now navigate a thin big-man market to find a player who can be a consistent lob threat and paint protector. The pressure on the front office is immense, as failing to secure an impactful center would not only hamper their championship aspirations but also risk further frustrating Doncic, who has made his desire for an elite frontcourt partner clear.
