Iga Swiatek's campaign at the 2026 Wuhan Open ended in tears as she struggled to compete against Maja Chwalinska in their blockbuster all-Polish semifinal.

Iga Swiatek's physiotherapist Maciej Ryszczuk faced backlash from fans after publicly addressing a mid-match discussion during the 2026 Wuhan Open semifinal. After Swiatek was seen crying while discussing whether to continue playing against Maja Chwalinska, Ryszczuk clarified on X that he had urged her to retire three times. Supporters criticized him for posting private discussions on social media while his client was actively struggling on the court.
Swiatek eventually lost the semifinal match 7-5, 6-1 to compatriot Chwalinska. In her post-match press conference, Swiatek revealed she had been dealing with quad pain throughout the tournament and decided against retiring so Chwalinska could win on merit.
