Duncan Ferguson: What awaits former Everton and Newcastle striker in shock managerial role with Glentoran?

Former Everton and Newcastle United striker Duncan Ferguson is expected to be formally confirmed as the new manager of Glentoran on Monday. The 54-year-old Scot replaces Declan Devine, who parted ways with the east Belfast club on September 14. Glentoran previously considered options including Tiernan Lynch and Cliftonville manager Jim Magilton before finalizing a deal with Ferguson, who brings high-profile pedigree to the Irish Premiership.

BBC Sport NI's Jonathan Bradley describes the left-field appointment as a gamble for the club, which has not won a league title since 2009. Ferguson previously managed Forest Green Rovers and Inverness Caledonian Thistle following his departure from Everton in 2022. He inherits an imbalanced squad built under Devine, but one that recently achieved four wins and a draw under interim manager Paddy McCourt.
