Aaron Loupalo-Bi opened the scoring for Fleetwood in the 21st minute before Viktor Gyokeres equalized for Arsenal early in the second half. Arsenal youngster Max Dowman was later sent off in the 85th minute for an off-the-ball incident.

Fleetwood secured the historic upset in the shootout after goalkeeper Jay Lynch saved Bruno Guimaraes's spot-kick, allowing Conor Haughey to convert the winning penalty against Arsenal debutant Illan Meslier.
