Max Eberl has revealed how Bayern Munich ended up appointing Vincent Kompany as Thomas Tuchel's successor two years ago after being turned down by both Julian Nagelsmann and Ralf Rangnick.

Bayern Munich board member for sport Max Eberl has detailed how the club hired Vincent Kompany as manager in 2024. After Julian Nagelsmann opted to stay with the German national team and Ralf Rangnick pursued other options, Eberl contacted Kompany directly following Burnley's relegation from the Premier League. A four-hour phone call and an endorsement from former Bayern manager Pep Guardiola convinced the club hierarchy to finalize the appointment.
Eberl noted that Kompany's positive tactical vision at Burnley stood out despite their relegation. Since taking charge, Kompany has won two Bundesliga titles, the DFB-Pokal, and two DFL-Supercups. However, Eberl confirmed that the 40-year-old manager is currently stepping away to recover at home after being hospitalized with meningeal irritation following a collapse on the training pitch.
