The Story in 60 Seconds

Campaigners are working to safeguard the site of First Hampden in Glasgow and convert it into a community hub. The location, regarded as the world's first purpose-built international football stadium, is currently available for rent after a bowling club closed earlier this year. First Hampden Community Interest Company hopes to secure the site to preserve its rich sporting heritage and provide an accessible public space for local residents.

The group's initial community asset transfer request was rejected by City Property Glasgow, which manages the council-owned land and requires commercially reasonable terms. Organizers are now conducting feasibility studies to submit an official lease bid. The ground originally hosted Scotland's national team and Queen's Park FC starting in 1878, pioneering many innovations in modern football.
