Barcelona: French defender tracked by Arsenal and Chelsea takes step towards move, January deal unlikely
Key Things to Know
  • Castello Lukeba reportedly wants to join Barcelona and his new agent has met with Deco regarding a potential transfer.
  • A permanent January transfer is considered unlikely because RB Leipzig refuse to let Lukeba depart mid-season.
  • Arsenal and Chelsea are also monitoring Lukeba, but the defender reportedly favors a switch to Barcelona.
The Story in 60 Seconds

RB Leipzig defender Castello Lukeba reportedly wants to join Barcelona and has taken a step toward the move by signing with agency Excellence Sport, which also represents Jules Kounde. Lukeba's new agent has met with Barcelona sporting director Deco to discuss a potential permanent transfer. However, a January switch is deemed unlikely as Leipzig refuse to sanction a mid-season departure, and Barcelona lack the financial resources to complete the signing this winter.

While Arsenal and Chelsea are also monitoring the 23-year-old French center-back, Lukeba reportedly views Barcelona as his ideal destination. Barcelona could instead target a summer move, potentially financed by Ronald Araujo's prospective departure to Liverpool. In the meantime, the Catalan side is seeking another left-footed center-back on affordable terms for the upcoming winter window.
