Barcelona midfielder Rodri has confirmed he rejected Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho before completing his summer transfer from Manchester City. The 30-year-old World Cup winner chose Hansi Flick’s side and has already established himself at Camp Nou with five total appearances.
The intense Clasico battle for his signature dominated headlines during the summer transfer window after it became clear he wanted out of Manchester City. Real Madrid initially stood as firm favorites to win the race, but Barcelona acted decisively to secure the 30-year-old star. The Spanish midfielder integrated instantly into Flick’s high-pressing system, helping the Catalan side score 26 goals across six La Liga and Champions League matches. His tactical awareness provides midfield control and press resistance, keeping Barcelona dynamic on the attack and solid in defense. Completing the deal required careful management within La Liga’s Limite Salarial to keep their Squad Cost Ratio under control.
Speaking in an interview with Mundo Deportivo, Rodri praised the Real Madrid boss while expressing slight frustration over leaked conversations.
He said: “Well, I don’t think it’s really his place to reveal a private conversation, but he clearly expressed his desire for me to join and what I could bring to the team. He treated me very well.”
Despite turning down the offer, the midfielder called Mourinho personally to express his gratitude.
He said: “When I made my decision, I also rang him to thank him for his interest and the way he’d treated me. I think he’s a brilliant manager.”
He added: “He’s already proved that wherever he’s been during his great spells, and Real Madrid are going to be a tough opponent in this La Liga season.”
Rodri has already delivered key contributions at Camp Nou, earning three starts and two substitute appearances during an ideal start to the campaign. While he could have played a similar central role at the Bernabeu, his attributes suit Flick’s high-intensity style far better than Mourinho’s setup. With both clubs battling at the top of La Liga, Rodri’s decision adds extra heat to an already fierce title race.
