You might think Man United are complete sh*t, but they should in fact be mired in mid-table mediocrity rather than abject despair. Here’s why.

Football365's Dave Tickner examines Opta's Expected Premier League Table to identify the teams most significantly underperforming their expected points tally. Nottingham Forest lead the rankings with an underperformance of -7.9 points, driven primarily by severe finishing issues in front of goal. Sunderland (-4.8), Bournemouth (-4.6), Manchester United (-3.7), and Fulham (-3.1) complete the top five underperforming sides according to the underlying statistics.
Tickner argues that while Manchester United remain a mid-table quality side under Michael Carrick, their underlying numbers suggest their struggles are exaggerated. Similarly, Sunderland sit at the bottom of the table largely due to poor finishing efficiency, while Fulham and Bournemouth have recently begun converting their positive expected data into actual Premier League victories.
