Aston Villa told Sven Botman should’ve been sent off as Premier League panel admit mistake
Key Things to Know
  • The Premier League KMI panel ruled Sven Botman should have been sent off against Aston Villa.
  • The panel voted 4-1 that Botman committed serious foul play on Nicolas Jackson.
  • A 3-2 majority on the panel supported the VAR decision not to intervene.
The Story in 60 Seconds

The Premier League's Key Match Incidents panel decided that Newcastle United defender Sven Botman should have received a red card for a tackle on Aston Villa's Nicolas Jackson. During the October 17 match, Botman was issued only a yellow card after a late challenge on the forward. The independent panel voted 4-1 that the challenge constituted serious foul play, noting that Botman was out of control and lunged forcefully.

Despite determining a red card was warranted, the panel supported the non-VAR intervention by a 3-2 vote, viewing it as not a clear and obvious error. Referees' chief Howard Webb described the tackle as high-end reckless and backed the on-field decision standing. Aston Villa won the fixture 1-0 courtesy of a first-half goal from Johan Manzambi against Mathias Jaissle's side.
