Chris Kavanagh, from Greater Manchester, is one of England’s elite match officials

Chris Kavanagh has been named as the referee for Liverpool's Premier League match against Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday, October 11, 2026. The Manchester-born official will oversee the clash alongside assistant referees Dan Cook and Nick Greenhalgh, fourth official Andy Madley, and VAR official Paul Howard.
Kavanagh previously drew controversy during Manchester City's home victory against Liverpool last season when Virgil van Dijk had an equalizing goal ruled out. The high-stakes match also marks City's first outing since an independent commission found the club guilty of breaching Premier League financial rules.
