The Carabao Cup offers a chance for Xabi Alonso and Chelsea to mix things up, however the manager has confirmed one starter despite a difficult performance.
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has confirmed that 21-year-old goalkeeper Mike Penders will start against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup fourth round. Alonso publicly reaffirmed his confidence in the Belgian shot-stopper despite his mistake during a 2-0 defeat to Tottenham on Saturday, which marked his first full Premier League appearance.
Penders inadvertently scored an own goal from a corner before Mathys Tel secured Tottenham's win at Stamford Bridge. Writer James Fudge argues that Alonso is right to retain Penders, especially with fellow goalkeeper Emi Martinez sidelined while recovering from jaw surgery.
