Johnny Emerson seized his opportunity for Newcastle under-21s with a starring role in their win over Luton Town

Newcastle United under-21 forward Emerson opened up about his difficult recovery from hernia and ACL injuries after making his first competitive start in 18 months. The 20-year-old impressed on his return, setting up two goals in a 4-1 victory over Luton Town in the Premier League Cup on Friday. Robbie Stockdale's side secured the win through an own goal, a Henry Johnson header, and a brace from Afner Ca.
Emerson described his prolonged layoff as the toughest period of his life, crediting academy staff and physio Carl Nelson for supporting his rehabilitation. Now back in contention, he is aiming to secure regular minutes and catch the eye of first-team head coach Matthias Jaissle, who has frequently integrated academy talent.
