Sir Bob Murray has spoken emotionally about the growing need for Sunderland’s Foundation of Light as the charity prepares to celebrate its 25th anniversary

Former Sunderland chairman Sir Bob Murray spoke emotionally about the vital necessity of the Foundation of Light as the charity approaches its 25th anniversary. Established in 2001, the independent organization supports thousands across Sunderland, South Tyneside, and County Durham. Murray emphasized that community need has surged over the past quarter-century, describing the heartbreak of seeing people who cannot afford food or heating turn to the charity for essential help.
The Foundation operates from the £20 million Beacon of Light facility, which welcomes around 7,000 visitors weekly and requires £100,000 per week to run. As part of its anniversary milestone, the charity launched its five-year Brighter Tomorrow strategy. Chief executive Lesley Spuhler revealed that the six-story facility is now running out of space, prompting plans for further potential developments to meet continuing regional demand.
