Former Hibernian midfielder Michael Stewart revealed that a potential transfer to Gordon Strachan's Celtic fell through because the Glasgow club needed time to clear space on their wage bill. Speaking on the Not Another Football Podcast, Stewart stated that Celtic expressed interest after scout John Park moved between the clubs, alongside several former Hibs players.

Celtic asked Stewart to wait while they attempted to offload midfielders Jiri Jarosik and Thomas Gravesen. Rather than waiting for Celtic to resolve their squad situation, Stewart opted for a permanent return to Hearts, citing unfinished business at Tynecastle.
