What does the SPFL putting the live UK broadcast rights for William Hill Premiership matches out to tender mean for the future of Scottish football?
The Scottish Professional Football League has initiated an Invitation to Tender for live UK broadcast rights starting in the 2029/30 season. The move comes three seasons ahead of the current Sky Sports and Premier Sports contract expiration. SPFL chief executive Neil Doncaster stated the organization is flexible regarding match volume and cited strong broadcaster interest.
An unnamed sports broadcasting industry insider noted that going to tender so early suggests the league has received interest from multiple parties. While platforms like Netflix and Paramount+ represent emerging competitors in sports broadcasting, the insider cautioned that an auction does not guarantee an increased financial return.
