Rangers entered the international break having secured six consecutive victories in all competitions under manager Derek McInnes. The winning streak featured consecutive Old Firm victories over Celtic, including a 1-0 win at Parkhead that narrowed Celtic's Scottish Premiership lead to two points. During the break, discussions have centered on how long Rangers can retain 22-year-old South African centre-back Olwethu Makhanya following his £3 million summer transfer from Philadelphia Union.
Makhanya was one of 14 summer acquisitions and has anchored an improving defence alongside Emmanuel Fernandez, Dujon Sterling, James Penrice, and Tuur Rommens. In goal, Croatian shot-stopper Ivor Pandur has also settled after joining from Hull City, overcoming early doubts from supporters to deliver strong performances during the club's positive run of form.
