Both boxers are promoted by Matchroom, and Booth stated that the camps are currently waiting on an official date for the fight. Ennis is aiming to become the undisputed champion in the division following his stoppage victory over Xander Zayas in June, which earned him the WBA and WBO belts.

Kelly captured the IBF super-welterweight title in January by defeating Bakhram Murtazaliev before completing a successful defense against Caoimhin Agyarko in July.
