From a potential “upset of the year,” when he walked into the Lion’s Den and snatched away Nick Ball’s WBA featherweight title in early February, Brandon Figueroa has delivered the ultimate “letdown of the year.” Ahead of his first title…

Brandon Figueroa has been stripped of his WBA featherweight title after failing to make weight for his scheduled defense against Tomoki Kameda. Figueroa tipped the scale at 127.4 pounds, which was 1.4 pounds over the 126-pound division limit, and only managed to drop to 126.8 pounds on a subsequent attempt. Under WBA rules, only Kameda can claim the championship belt with a victory, while the title will become vacant if Figueroa wins.
The fight remains scheduled following negotiations over a financial penalty for the weight infraction. Figueroa's weight cut was reportedly complicated by a recent hamstring injury, though the extent of its impact remains unconfirmed. The loss of his championship alters Figueroa's competitive standing as discussions continue regarding potential future bouts against Naoya Inoue or a permanent move up to the 130-pound super featherweight division.
