The cricketer who helped popularise women’s cricket in India has stepped down as captain but will continue to play for the national team

Harmanpreet Kaur announced her decision to step down as the captain of the Indian women's cricket team via an Instagram post on October 6, 2026. Kaur confirmed that she will continue playing as an active batter for India despite relinquishing leadership duties.
Throughout her captaincy, Kaur guided India to major achievements, including an ODI World Cup triumph, an Asia Cup title, and an Asian Games gold medal. She captained India in five Tests, 51 ODIs, and 155 T20Is, establishing a transformative legacy in Indian women's cricket alongside leading the Mumbai Indians to the inaugural WPL title.
