Usman Khawaja has claimed that the entire Australian touring party knew about the plan to tamper with the ball using sandpaper during the 2018 Test series against South Africa. Speaking ahead of the release of his autobiography, Sabr, the former Test opener stated that sandpaper was also used in the second Test at Port Elizabeth before Cameron Bancroft was caught on camera in Cape Town.
Following the 2018 investigation, Cricket Australia suspended only Bancroft, Steve Smith, and David Warner. Khawaja argued that the team should have taken collective responsibility, stating that the trio were unfairly singled out. Cricket Australia responded by stating that it remains comfortable with the original findings of its integrity process.
