South Africa could field an opener who has never performed the role at first-class level, while one of their spinners might face the axe

Kagiso Rabada is set to return for South Africa in the second Test against Australia at St George's Park after recovering from a hamstring injury. Captain Temba Bavuma confirmed that the fast bowler has been cleared by medical staff following his absence since the IPL in May. Bavuma praised Rabada's leadership and impact on the bowling attack, while Australian captain Pat Cummins acknowledged the significant challenge the paceman poses.
South Africa is also contemplating several lineup alterations following their opening Test defeat in Durban. Tristan Stubbs and Kyle Verreynne have been dropped, allowing Ryan Rickelton to take over wicketkeeping duties. The Proteas are considering handing a debut to either Marques Ackerman or Matthew Breetzke to open the batting alongside Aiden Markram, while spin bowlers Keshav Maharaj and Simon Harmer compete for a single spot.
