Former India batter Wasim Jaffer believes Rohit Sharma should have continued as ODI captain until the 2027 World Cup.
Former India batter Wasim Jaffer believes Rohit Sharma should have remained India's ODI captain until the 2027 World Cup rather than stepping down in October 2025. Speaking on his YouTube channel on October 8, 2026, Jaffer acknowledged that successor Shubman Gill has performed well, but argued that Sharma's extensive experience should have taken priority for both the national ODI team and Mumbai Indians.
Jaffer highlighted Sharma's ongoing strong batting form, including scoring 225 runs during a three-match series against the West Indies. In 2026 alone, Sharma has recorded 604 runs in 12 ODI innings at an average of 50.33, and is scheduled to feature in upcoming series against New Zealand and Sri Lanka.
