Cristiano Ronaldo has been named the inaugural winner of the BOAT (Ballon d'Or of All Time) award, with fans voting his 2008 campaign at Manchester United as the greatest individual season in the history of football's most prestigious individual honour.
Cristiano Ronaldo has won the inaugural BOAT (Ballon d'Or of All Time) award introduced by France Football, finishing ahead of rival Lionel Messi. Fans selected Ronaldo's 2008 Ballon d'Or-winning season with Manchester United as the greatest individual campaign in the accolade's history over Messi's 91-goal year in 2012.
The contest used a fan-driven digital vote requiring a one-euro entry fee, which included entry into a prize draw for 2027 Ballon d'Or ceremony tickets. Ronaldo and Messi dominated the voting by securing the top 12 positions, while Brazil's Ronaldo Nazario ranked 13th for his 2002 campaign.
